Protecting Our Past and Future
Sq’éwlets serves as the voice for our community, enhancing and enriching the lives of our members through social development, health, education, employment, and more.
We Are People Of The Sturgeon
Our elders tell us we have always lived here, in S'ólh Téméxw. As Stó:lō, we are People of the River, specifically the Fraser River. We are also Xwélmexw, People of the Land. Our nation is a union of tribes connected by our families, the land, and the rivers.
Our tribal name, 'Sq'éwlets,' comes from the word 'q'éw,' meaning 'to go around the bend in the river.' Our community is located where the Harrison River bends and flows into the Fraser River.
These stories were traditionally passed from grandparents to grandchildren in our language, Halq'eméylem. They were shared by the fire in the longhouse and at our fishing rocks as we worked together. Today, we continue to share these stories through books, videos, audio recordings, and the internet, in addition to our traditional ways.
